Up Topic General / Shoes and Gear / Anyone see the Moeben ad in the latest Ultrarunning?
- - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2009-11-13 8:16 AM
It's on the back inside cover. A picture of the owner's son (who looks like a MAJOR douchebag) in low rider jeans, no shirt and tattoo arm sleeves.:roll::roll:

The ad isn't on their site but when you look at the photo galleries you can see similar type shots.

Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2009-11-13 12:19 PM
The owner's sons are Moe and Ben. Moeben is the name of the company. lame.

http://moeben.com/

Moeben is a sportswear line created by ultramarathon runner Shannon Farar-Griefer after realizing the importance and demand of comfortable, practical, and protective type clothing for the outdoor enthusiast...

Does a butterfly print provide more comfort or is more protective?

Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2009-11-13 4:20 PM
The whole website has a scattered vibe to it. On some levels it is beating you over the head with "My family is SOOOOO good looking!" sentiment. On other levels it is just plain fucking ridiculous - arm panties for toddlers?!?!?!?!?! On other levels it is unclear what exactly the product is for - is it for running, cycling, looking sexy, being a fucking douchelord or all of the above?

Having pictures of people in wife beaters and arm panties, Jen Shelton almost naked in arm panties standing in front of a Ferrari (WTF?!), huge haired girls with leg sleeves, holding a snowboard wearing a vest and arm panties, etc? is baffling.

I also get the impression that the lady that Shannon Farar-Griefer is a self absorbed pain in the ass. I mean, she put a link to a TV commercial she was in for Slim Fast! WTF connection does that have to your Moeben products?
Parent - - By ampman40 (shoe whore) Date 2009-11-13 4:51 PM
Jen Shelton is cute but would have been mush cuter standing in front of something a little more organic....like a tree maybe. I try not to get too wrapped up/swayed by the images used in advertising but who would ever think an ultra runner and a Ferrari should ever go together.
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2009-11-16 7:55 AM
DD has met her and said she is really nice. That said the articles I've read about her - most notably one in Outside, make her seem like a brash, aimless, pain in the ass.
Parent - - By nawwal [us] Date 2009-11-16 8:59 AM
The dude that wrote "Born To Run" pretty much painted the same picture about her.  Wild partier, always waiting for her and some other dude to crawl out of bed to go on runs, etc.
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2009-11-16 9:04 AM
How is that book?
Parent - By mkh (Mr. Fashionista) [us] Date 2009-11-16 11:27 AM
Not too bad, but jumps all over the place and there are a couple chapters that seem to have just been thrown in there that doesnt' really tie into the actual story that he is telling which was annoying.

A lot of it was basically "Look how sweet barefoot running or near barefoot running is." Which results in dozens of people coming into the store look who barely run looking for the stupid five finger things.  They are the new newtons.
Parent - - By nawwal [us] Date 2009-11-16 1:01 PM
I'll echo MKH's remarks.  It does jump everywhere.  It's cool to learn about the Tarahumara tribe and their training, lifestyle, etc.  It talks about Barefoot Ted and 5 fingers and how Nike screwed everything up for all runners when they introduced their technologies.  A bit of history about Leadville which was cool.  For some reason, he even talks about how man developed and why we all were bred for running (hunting, etc.)

Not a bad book but I wouldn't read it again.  I borrowed it and read it over the weekend.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2009-11-16 1:24 PM
it sounds like a collection of stuff I've already read elsewhere. I'll pass on it.
Parent - By dangerousdan (bear terrorist) [us] Date 2009-11-15 9:14 PM
I've met Shannon Farar-Griefer and she's really super nice.  I think a lot of it is that she lives in SoCal, which is pretty much like another country as far as I can tell.
Parent - - By ACFR [us] Date 2010-07-20 1:47 PM
Agreed.  The arm panties also seem like the single most pointless piece of clothing ever devised.  Why not wear a LS shirt?  (at least it's not as ugly).

hey everyone bashing my sons and company Moeben- chill!!!  My son is not a douchebag, I don't even know if he knows what one is, but maybe, since he's 20 and in college...but don't call him a douchebag, he's a good kid as are all 3 of mine.  I started Moeben when I was pregnant with my 3rd son and put on bed rest because I was 45 years old and pregnant and just finished my 3rd Badwater, and today as I write this I just finished my 5th Badwater less than a week ago...I'm new at the game of advertising and clothes designing, just thougth I'd bring in clothes that we were missing in the sport and what we as runners were in search of, especially people like me who's had skin cancer scares, and that's why i designed the UV arm sleeves...As far as ads, I wanted to do things that were different and made people talk, but not like this...WTF is wrong, why are people mean!!!  Come with me next time I volunteer at Children's Hospital and work with kids who are sick with cancer...Moeben gives a percentage of every sale to charities like children with cancer and austism and more, so before you bash others, why don't you look at what you've donated to the world besides being mean!  Shannon Farar-Griefer proud mom of 3, ultra runner, and Moeben mom!

I apologize for talking about your son that way. It was uncalled for and cheap.

That said I still think your advertising is poor.
Parent - By darbycrash Date 2010-07-18 4:31 PM
i wasn't one of the bashers but your post made me curious.

what percentage of each sale gets donated to charity?

also, did you run Badwater pregnant? you said you started Moeben when you were pregnant and on bed rest and had just finished Badwater???  you didn't really do that race pregnant did you?

don't mind the Beard, he collects Star War toys.
Parent - - By Run MT [us] Date 2010-07-18 6:31 PM
The question I would like to ask is how successful was your advertising? As much as it didn't appeal to some of those in this forum was it profitable for your company?
Parent - - By moeben [us] Date 2010-07-19 6:47 PM
Hi everyone
I didn't run Badwater pregnant, I don't think that would be too smart, considering I just ran it again last week and all the hurtles out there alone are enough, no way would i or could I run it pregnant, plus I don't think it would be too smart, actually I'm now questioning if just running Badwater is smart anyway (:  2 weeks befor Badwater, I had just came off of a stressed kidney experience from Western States 100 and was pulled at 80 miles, and it took me 36 hours to tinkle, so I was feeling unsure about Badwater, but I ran it anyway and felt terrible the first day but started to feel ok after mile 90, plus I was launching new Moeben stuff so I had to just bite the bullet...I ran Badwater in 2001 (did the double), 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and when I ran it in 2006, I was thinking it was my last Badwater because months prior I had doctors telling me that I had MS, so I asked if I could run just one more race, and that was Badwater...After the race, I went to Tahiti to let my feet heal, and to be with my family and just relax before I were to start treatment, but I came home pregnant and that next MRI and treatment were put on hold.  I was still running while I was pregnant and I was training my son Moe for his first marathon and the doctors didn't like this idea being that I was 45 years old, so they put me on bed rest from my 7th month on.  Moeben was started basically because my running freinds and I are always thinking when we run "what is the running world missing" and always loved the arm warmers, but black and heavy fleece were so boring adn you really couldn't push them down to wear at the wrist.  I also had some issues with skin cancer scares (all have come back benign) so I thougth about a UV arm sleeve that was hip, fun, you know a bit more fashionable, and what about a pocket, we're always looking for pockets to stash Gu's or an Ipod in.  I asked the Western States 100 mile race director if I could bring a few arm sleeves that I designed and give to runners to try and see what they thought.  he explained that I need to give a pair to all the runners, so I quickly found a sewing contractor, gave her fabric, and had her cut and sew 380 pairs, which she loved since she was going out of business and loved having work.  The arm sleeves were just going to be a hobby, something I would do for the running community and bring a few pairs, here and there...Anyway, I brought my 7 week old baby, 380 pairs of arm sleeves to the race and a big chunk of the Western States runners were running and outdoor store owners and after the race I was bombarded with emails and phone calls for orders...I didn't tell them this, but I had no idea what I was doing, and don't say that about my advertising because I'm still learning with all of this, and most people love my ads, so be nice (:  anyway that's how it started and Moeben will give 1.00 a pair at any expo that I do, and an overall percentage goes from each order depending on the order.  For example, at Boston Marathon I sold 840 pairs, and Moeben donated 840.00 to The Chase Foundation, whcih is also a place where I volunteer and work with kids with cancer and is truly my favorite cause, especially that I'm hands on and Moeben can help with providing art supplies, child life specialists, etc and I love to read stories to the kids, it's pretty neat...So just don't go bashing my kids or I'll make you run Badwater without water and ice and no Moeben to protect you!!!  Actually now that my baby is 3, I would rather spend more time with him and on the beach or just hanging out than working everyday like this, and never being in this business before, I'm getting a taste of the real world, and it's pretty brutal, so being a runner, we are supposed to stick with each other and I wouldn't say mean things about someone's kids or even their style of advertising, actually why that ad was even in UR magazine was because I had a deadline for the magazine and the ad I was going to put in wasn't ready so I threw that one in, and it's definitely more for the Moeben fashion line, anyway, you know what they say "when they stop talking about you is when you gotta worry" (:  so keep talking, just be nice, OK???  got enough shit in this brutal world of running a company!!!  Hope that answered everyone's questions, oh, and yes the advertising has paid off...agian, most people love the ads, this is the first negative stuff, so that's why I'm replying back, Moeben is my baby too...

Great story. I hope I can assume that the diagnosis of MS was a false alarm. My mom had it, certainly hope you do not. Best of luck with your company.
Parent - - By moeben [us] Date 2010-07-19 10:16 PM
this is so funny...I thought Facebook was addicting with all these new friends and conversations, but this is even better!  I won't say anything about The Beard, he apologized about my kids, that was good enough for me...as far as the MS, I had another MRI when my baby was about 1 year old, and there were no new lesions, but the existing ones were there, so they think that being pregnant put the MS into remission, most likely temporary, but I have to go back and repeat MRI's, and most likely lumbar punctures and other tests again, so if it picks up where it left, I can nip it in the bud...I live every day like it's a gift (:  because it is...
When you say your mom had MS, can you send me an email to shannonfg@aol.com and give me more info, if you're comfortable with that, I'm so sorry to hear this.  It's a horrible disease and I'm hearing more people who have been diagnosed with it.  Scott Jurek's (7x Western State 100 champion) mom had MS too...3 doctors told me that I have MS and a very aggressive MS, but that was before baby, and lately I've been feeling ok to the point where I'm avoiding my next MRI (funny how that works), so I think my baby is really my little angel...my kids see me as "superwoman" and nothing would hurt me more to show them less...

So now that you are all my Runango Running form buddies (:  if you sned me your address, and don't worry Beard, I won't be sending Guido over for being a douchebag (can't believe I'm calling you that, my kids would be so proud of their classless mom), but I will send you a free pair for yourselves and your kids - ok and here's my email shannonfg@aol.com, just give me sizes in kids and adults and print or color preference and I'll send you some free Moeben.

I have to say despite my initial criticisms I really appreciate your presence here.

Before anyone jumps all over me for backpedaling I want to say that I am not angling for free stuff. I know a lot of people like arm warmers but I've never really seen the point - if it is cold I will wear a long sleeve shirt. If it gets warm during the run I will push up the sleeves or stash the shirt in a pack. I really can't think of any situation I have ever been in that arm warmers would have been necessary.
Parent - - By jalashkar (Yahd) Date 2010-07-21 6:55 AM
That's why they make sense for cycling, and not much sense for running.  : pbbt:
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2010-07-21 7:15 AM
I agree. I can see the point for cycling but not for running. If I were to get a pair for cycling  (now that I have a new bike and am a BIG TIME cyclist :laugh: ) I would most likely go with Pearl Izumi.
Parent - - By Oog Date 2010-07-21 7:40 AM
they either work for cycling and running or don't work for both.

The beard's logic is flawed, but I didn't expect that from you. Not you, J. :p
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2010-07-21 8:10 AM
My thoughts are that cyclists often are out for a lot longer than runners so the chance that temperatures will change are greater. It's not often that a run starts in weather that necessitates sleeves but ends up being warm enough for short sleeves. Unless you are running for multiple hours it just is a non issue. For the few times it may be an issue a long sleeve shirt will work. just push up the sleeves.

Long sleeve cycling jerseys are tight and aren't really able to have the sleeves pushed up. It's a lot easier for a cyclist to remove a pair of arm warmers than to change shirts.
Parent - - By bongobop [us] Date 2010-07-21 8:44 AM
" Unless you are running for multiple hours it just is a non issue"

Am I wrong, but aren't Moebin arm sleeves being advertised in many ultra/ trail running magazines? In other words, to runners who do just that- go out for many hours.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2010-07-21 8:58 AM
their website shows people doing all sorts of things in them - skiing, skateboarding, standing around in jeans and wife beaters, etc. I guess that's meant to show the versatility of the product but I think it just seems like they don't really know what they are for.
Parent - By Oog Date 2010-07-21 10:42 AM
Yeah, I love to ruin running shirts by "Pushing up the sleeves" and stretching out the wrist hole. Secondly, you can never push it up past your elbows.  So what's the point then. With arm warmer you can wear them..then take them off. Plus, if you want to have tight sleeves with a long sleeve shirt, you have to wear a tight shirt, but I don't want that. Or as you seem to suggest you have to bring along a fanny back to put your long sleeve shirt in and while you have a short sleeve shirt on underneath.  I didn't know the weather in Wisconsin was such a constant for hours and hours. In the spring/fall its very often that the run will start cool and end warm.

We can have this debate again and again, but  you are wrong.:p
Parent - By jennifer7 (100 mile studette) [us] Date 2010-07-21 11:54 AM
I don't like pushing up my sleeves b/c

1) I don't like all that material bunching up at my elbows and

2) technical fabrics are slippery and usually won't stay up so I'm constantly pushing them back up and

3) if the wrist band is tight and does stay up then the slippery material slides down and over and flops around and that irritates the piss out of me and

4) the weather down here is such that it's not cold enough when you start for long sleeves over short sleeves, but cold enough that short sleeves aren't enough, and by the end of the run long sleeves are too much (so you can't wear just a long sleeve). Arm panties plus short sleeves are perfect.

Interesting thread. I'd never heard of this company until now. I love arm panties for cycling and running for the exact reasons Oog mentions above. I don't like how they're mostly so heavy. I will have to check these ones out. Argyle, the greatest pattern known to human kind, is so under used and I love the ones I see on the website! :D

Finally, Jenn should totally model for them. B-)

Actually, I googled "douchebag" and my name came up!  Go figure...It's cool, I've been called worse...no actually i was bored one minute and googled my name and this thread came up, but it's fun (now) and Beard, you don't have to like Moeben, buddy that's cool, I can't please everyone!!!  But, here's a few reasons why they are practical and better than a long sleeve or jacket.  I have run several 100 mile races, and let's say Western States 100 for instance, we start off in the cold and snow and then a few hours later, we have the triple degree canyon heat, then if you're slow like me, we soon get to face the night time temperatures and then early morning and next day climate changes.  So, we don't have the luxury of someone as far as crew to just take our jacket or long sleeve and with arm sleeves you can pull them up when it's cold or even better and the real purpose of Moeben is to keep the hot sun and harmful rays off your arms, and when you feel you don't want the protection, you can just slide them down at the wrist and use to wipe your nose, or other areas, if need be (:  Never ask an ultra runner why they are only wearing one arm sleeve, jsut a little side note...anyway, the best part too is on the hot days what we've tested and actually works better, are the heavier fleece fabric (they hold moisture in longer) is dipping the arm sleeve in water and then wearing them, and this will help keep to body temperature down.  Runners at races, such as Western States would dip the arm sleeve in the river crossings before we head up the hot canyons, such as Duncan and Devils's Thumb, and if you've run it, you would agree how awesome Moeben arm sleeves are for this alone...plus in Badwater, that's what all the runners were doing, is keeping their Moeben arm and leg sleeves wet.  So the douchebag picture with my hard working (no pay) college student son who volunteers at the old folks home, where he's wearing the wife beater and arm sleeves, those arm sleeves are made in a cool bamboo and flocking and sold in more boutique type stores, although, Running Warehouse and Zombie Runner do sell them, but Moeben arm sleeves aren't just for running and outdoor sports, they are great for having in your glove box, purse, office desk and for those times when your body needs a little warmth and a jacket is just too much and they are fashionable, listen I live in LA, it's tough out here trying to be hip!!!  So Beard, I hope one day you and I will cross paths, maybe at a nice trail run or something, because you know you will be wearing Moeben arm sleeves and you know you will just simply love me!!!  Oh and the upper arm pocket on the arm sleeves are good too for your Ipod, Gu, tissue or for Beard's case his own mini douchebag - I've never used this word in my lifetime more than I've used or heard of it in the past week...

For the same reason that you should never ask a trail runner why s/he was wearing two socks at the start of the race and crossed the finish line wearing only one?

Shannon, BTW, thanks, you or one of your wholesalers donated pairs of arm warmers to be given out as raffle prizes at the Ridgecrest OTHTC 30/50K last December.  I didn't win but I happened to be passing the "claim your prize" table just as a sturdily built man was assessing the pair of size M lavender sleeves that the volunteer had handed him.  He took one look at them and at his biceps, shook his head and said "no way", and handed them to me with a "here, you'll fit into them better than I will".  Much appreciated!  I live in Santa Clarita where we can easily see 40-50 degree temperature swings in the course of a day.

I am the creator of Moeben, trust me, I'm the one tired and spread to thin from this fricken biz I started...you can go to my website www.moeben.com or www.ultrashannon.com (but it needs serious updating) or become my Facebook friend, and you will see me and all my Moeben girls who crewed me at Badwater last week, including Jenn Shelton, Deena, Lisa, Maria, Cheryl, and for the first time a Moeben guy, Aric, all decked out in the latest Moeben, and all the other Moeben posts and who else has two sons, (actually 3), who's names are Moe and Ben (please Beard don't make this a new thread)...plus I'm sending all of you, even Beard if he comes to my personal email, free Moeben gear, so I don't know anyone else who could do that but me (:  just be patient everyone that I'm sending Moeben to, as I'm probably not going into my office till Friday, having a hard time recovering from Badwater this time, it really kicked my butt, so I'm just trying to take it easy and work out of home till I feel normal again.  So I will ship all the freebies next week, Monday, Tuesday the latest.  I'm actually going up to Tevis (100 mile horse race on the WS100 course) this weekend to crew my freinds who are riding and take photos of riders in their Moeben's (see it's not just for runners).  All of you should be comedians, really you're funny.  Does everyone know each other?  Wouldn't it be great if we were just a bunch of fat old schlubs sitting on our couches with our hands down our pants and the other on the keyboard, and really not runners, just good ol folk who make fun of other runners and their products, hmm hmm Beard * how do I know you are runners who know about arm sleeves and not really unempolyed comedians?  Thanks Beard for creating this new fun highlight of my day!!!

I grew up near a nuclear power plant, so I'm wondering if I order arm warmers from Moeben if I am forced to order a pair or if I am able to order them in sets of three? And if so am I able to order 2 size Large for my regular arms and 1 size Small for that useless thing of an arm in the small of my back which I assure you is not a tail? Thank you.

I've met most of the folks here and we all try to be runners but that part about putting our hands down our pants? I mean, umm, we don't have to be fat schlubs to do that, do we? :wtf:
Parent - - By moeben [us] Date 2010-07-22 11:27 AM
I've realized that I'm really caught up on this thread, mostly because it's very entertaining.  I'm getting emails from most of you regarding a free pair of arm sleeves and that's cool, just can't ship those till next week since I'm leaving out of town tomorrow to help crew my friends in the Tevis 100 horse race and also the kids arm sleeves are still in production, but ready I hope tomorrow.  I will send you and your significant other and your children a free pair of UV Moeben arm sleeves, just send an email to shannonfg@aol.com and give me your sizes, print preference and an address where I can ship to.  A few of you have done this already, so i have your info, and this applies to all the above that are on this thread.  Ok off to mommy n me, with the new moms 20 years younger than me, and the real "opinion" makers of the world - it's another fun(ny) part of my life...
And no you don't have to be a fat schlub to pull off an Al Bundy, just best to do it in the privacy of your own home (:  have a good day everyone.  I'm finally feeling back to normal from the race, and now focusing on the next!

I would be interested in trying a pair even though I still don't really see the point of them (at least for me) but I think that after calling her son a d-bag it would be pretty sh*tty to ask her to send something.
