Up Topic Training / Marathons / late May BQ race recommendations?
- - By jwd1113 Date 2017-04-19 12:42 PM
OK, after a debacle on Monday, i need a BQ...

want to get the sciatic issue resolved - feel pretty good about that... and take advantage of my current fitness..

thinking about the weekends of 5/20-21 and 5/27/28

any suggestions?

biggest considerations:  course (do not want a net downhill)  and ease of travel from SC

would sign up for Grandma's... but i have a wedding that i have to attend that weekend

I can't vouch for ease of travel from SC, but Vermont City Marathon in Burlington VT is a great race. My first BQ. Mostly varied terrain but excessively uphill, downhill or flat.

i can get an easy direct flight from Charlotte to Burlington...

that one is definitely on the list.... although what happened last year really worries me

the weather at most of the races i'm considering is a crapshoot

Wait, you think there are people around here still running marathons?!

Good luck finding a May race. Weather is always dicey for a fast effort. What is causing your sciatica? I had the symptoms once and it took some time to go away. Frustrating part was that symptoms would not hit me until 7 or 8 miles into a run. Then go away 4-6 hours after running. I always felt that I should go for a run and get hobbled before the chiro/ART visit.

bulging disk(s)... spine doc is confident that an ultra-sound-guided cortisone shot will fix it.  says my issue is easy to target.  he actually strongly suggested it before, but my symptoms had resolved so i didn't want to do it.

and my doc wanted me to get some exercise before my MRI... wanted to see any swelling, inflammation, etc....

and it's actually more the femoral nerve more than the sciatic... i just usually lazily use that term 'cause more folks are familiar with it

indeed the weather is a serious roll of the dice... could get heat... could get sleet...

luckily, most of the races i've looked at are still open so i have multiple options

I'd recommend you get the treatment sooner rather than later.  It takes a while to be effective - on the order to 4-6 weeks.  It should continue to improve for another month or more after that.  The shot is a steroid not a pain killer, so it needs time to work on the inflammation.   Mine ended up being only $20k and was effective for about 3-4 months.   Everything I've read suggests much increased emphasis on core work can help extend the benefit.

have an appt next week (actually 2)

While this would involve a flight and then a 2-4 hour car ride or connecting flight, the first race which popped in my head was Bayshore in Traverse City, Michigan. (two hours from Grand Rapids or 4 hours from can also connect up to TC at both airports).  It was my first BQ and I would say 90% of the people I know who have run it, have run a PR there.  Flat, fast, scenic as you run most of the race along the bay and the weather is typically almost perfect....50-60's.  It doesn't get "hot" in northern Michigan until maybe late June.  I have been there in July and worn a hoody all day.

My running buddy and her sister both got BQ's there. They had all good things to say about it.

My Dad got a BQ there a couple of times - but it sells out FAST.

still 300+ spots open...

i may take the plunge and at least wager $103.75 on this one to save myself a spot

flights to GRR are reasonable...

issue now will be a hotel room in TC
Parent - By jwd1113 Date 2017-04-25 8:44 AM
interesting a nonstop flight to GRR is the same price as a flight to Detroit...
Parent - By elmtree Date 2017-04-25 10:22 AM
Hotel in TC would probably be expensive - Cadillac is about an hour away and might be cheaper.

I am doing Sugarloaf in Maine on 5/21. I don't think it's a net downhill but it has an elevation loss of 980 feet in the last 16 miles. Temps in the 40s at the start. Course and climate info here. Probably not so easy to get to from SC though.

Fargo is a fast course, mostly flat. It's May 20 this year. You'd probably want to fly into Minneapolis and drive (about 4 hours).

Fargo is pancake flat, great organization and a great race.

Mountains to beach in. Ojai, California. They opened up 200 more spots. Fly to LA and an hour plus maybe net downhill though.
Parent - By jwd1113 Date 2017-04-22 9:07 AM
long flight and i can fly east coast or midwest for about half the price...

have heard good things about that race

Buffalo marathon, May 28, flat, 6:30 am start. Major airport, medium sized marathon.
Parent - By jwd1113 Date 2017-04-22 9:04 AM
buffalo is definitely on the short list

Congrats! So glad you ran it!

OK... freaking out a little... i am missing splits from two of the chip mats in the second half of the race...16.2 and 21.2 :shocker!:

it's a total out and back course, so hoping it's nothing to worry about... several other folks are missing the 16.2...but didn't see anyone else missing the 21.2

surely they have video... don't remember seeing very many 'official' photographers along the way:wtf:
Parent - - By tahoeblue (spamkiller) Date 2017-05-29 1:22 PM
As long as your pace isn't a couple a minutes a mile faster over the section where the mats didn't record, you shouldn't have any issues.  With the Marathon Investigations dude going crazy, there are reports of race directors being overly zealous, but hopefully this one is smart enough to look at paces as well as mats.
Parent - - By jwd1113 Date 2017-05-29 4:59 PM
actually a little slower in the second half - ran a very even pace thru 22 and faded in the last 4...

think i should be proactive and contact the RD?
Parent - - By tahoeblue (spamkiller) Date 2017-05-29 5:26 PM
I'd not worry about it.  If anything negative is going to happen, it should be within the next couple of weeks and you can deal with it then.  That would be plenty of time to sort it out before September.  No real reason to put yourself on the RD's radar as far as I'm concerned.

It's not like this performance is completely out of line with your previous marathons, and your paces remained even throughout, so there isn't much that should cause any real concerns for the RD.

Last year at Boston, I missed the first 4 or 5 timing mats in the instantaneous results - including the starting mat.  Four or five weeks later, they all showed up.  Figured it was some issue with the timing company and they just had to pull data off the mat recorder that hadn't been transmitted during the race.

Hey - always enough time to run another :shocker!:
Parent - - By jwd1113 Date 2017-05-30 8:07 AM
they posted video of the finish and the turnaround point, so i'm optimistic there is other video

can't help but be a little nervous about it...
Parent - By elmtree Date 2017-05-30 9:54 AM
I'd stay calm - I'm sure you're not the only one - follow up in a couple of weeks if they still don't show.
Parent - By blazer85 [us] Date 2017-05-30 8:23 PM
Marathon Investigation looks for anamolies in the pace, so you shouldn't be on his radar.
Parent - By jwd1113 Date 2017-06-07 4:59 PM
i found a foto... {on page 327 of 360-some :mutmad: }... of me late in the race...

that and the videos have me feeling good about it
